About Ms. T --- Why I'm Here.
I am a woman of color, a mentor, a teacher and a team member. As a woman of color, it is my responsibility to provide a tangible example of what success could look like outside of the norm. I am here because I believe education is key to building success in my student’s lives. The importance of education was instilled in me by through the conditions of my childhood and adolescent life. As a child of teenage parents and a divorced family, poverty played a significant role in my upbringing. I was raised in a low-income area that had little value on education. I saw first hand what the lack of a great education created for my parents and it was sobering. I made a commitment to myself that I would not be a statistic.
It was the help and dedication from one teacher that really brought the idea of attending college a reality for me. He took the time to invest and believe in me and knew that I was much more than just a stat. he took the time to teach me how to fish and his actions have inspired me to have a sincere desire to teach those who have come from similar circumstances. As an educator, I am one to provide students with the direction and tools to become life-long learners. My opportunities for a successful career are much greater as I have taken this road. As poverty exists through the gift of one fish, I would like to minimize it through teaching students "how" to fish. |
